Combat & Events WORLD BOSS
Wraith
Zombie Land's crown-jewel world boss: a fully custom encounter that does not exist anywhere else in Rust. It is the hardest content on the server by design, and beating it pays out the best rewards available in-game, including a shot at components for the Wraith's own legendary M249.
Know What You Are Getting Into
Serious teams spend days or weeks preparing: stacking hundreds of gear sets, high-tier enchantments, and deep investment in Combat skills. Even then, one small mistake after hours of fighting can still wipe the attempt. That difficulty is intentional. If you are not ready for a long, punishing coordinated fight, do not buy one yet.
Starting A Wraith Fight
Buy a fight with /buywraith for 25,000 RP (the buy UI also shows the cost). When purchased, the Wraith spawns on the island marked clearly on the map as World Boss.
A bubble forms around the encounter so outsiders cannot interfere. Players who are not on the roster cannot enter the bubble, cannot harm the Wraith, and cannot draw ability aggro.

Custom AI
The Wraith is not running stock Rust NPC AI. Every movement and ability choice is driven by custom logic:
- Threat - builds as players contribute to the fight. Different actions raise threat at different rates. Higher threat means you look like the bigger problem and get engaged sooner. Threat also decays quickly, so it is used for fast, short-term targeting decisions.
- Rage - more like overall fight pressure that does not decay the same way. It tracks who has been the most influential across the entire fight so the Wraith can make longer-term decisions from that data.
- Intelligent abilities - the Wraith chooses defensive vs offensive timing, can hold an ability so a cooldown is not wasted, and uses aggressive or utility abilities to break up groups when that is the smarter play.
Idle Regeneration
Surrender Vote
If the attempt is collapsing, participants can vote to surrender with /wraith.surrender. It needs at least 75% of participants to agree, cannot be called until you are 2 minutes into the fight, and the vote resets if it does not pass within 15 minutes.
Surrendering ends the attempt and grades it as a loss for MMR, but it does not despawn the Wraith. That is intentional; teams cannot cheese surrender just to recover every kit after a failed run.
Rewards
On a kill, payouts go to players who meaningfully participated. Rewards scale with your score (not raw damage alone) and with your group's Team MMR. Expect things like:
- Legendary item drops - one of the rarest loot sources on the server
- Legendary components / component boxes - including a chance at comps for the Wraith's legendary M249 (see Legendary Items)
- RP and large Skill Tree XP awards
- Enchantment kits and scrolls
- Rare loot crates
Higher Team MMR fights unlock stronger reward tables: more legendary drops and more component boxes for players who clear the score threshold. Lower MMR groups still get rewarded, but with fewer top-end prizes.
Score Threshold
MMR System
MMR (Matchmaking Rating) tracks how skilled you are at Wraith specifically. Everyone starts at 1,000. Your rating only moves from real Wraith fights.
How your rating moves
After a fight you meaningfully participated in, MMR can go up or down based on:
- Personal performance - score, damage share, headshots, revives, kit recovery, survival
- Win or loss - wins pay more; losses hurt less, but they still matter
- Fight length vs what was expected for your group's skill bracket
- Actual contribution - token presence will not move your MMR; you have to actually help your team
Team MMR and boss scaling
When a fight starts, the system builds a Team MMR from the group. This is not just a simple average; different MMR levels have different impact on the result. That rating scales the fight:
- Boss HP and boss damage
- Minion HP, damage, and count
- Ability cooldowns (higher MMR = abilities more often)
- Vampiric healing
- XP / RP reward multipliers
- How many legendary items can drop
Lower Team MMR makes the fight more forgiving and pays less. Higher Team MMR makes it harsher and pays more.
Scaling is re-checked at stage transitions. If the group gets stronger as the fight goes on, the Wraith can keep up. Scaling only ever gets harder mid-fight; it does not get easier once a stage has pushed it up. Trying to manipulate who is in the fight mid-run to soft-nerf the boss will not work the way people hope.
Late joins
You can still earn MMR if you join late, but late joins are priced into the system specifically to stop low-MMR players starting a soft Wraith and then calling high-MMR players in at the end. The later someone joins, the more exponential the MMR impact of their participation can become.
Seasons
MMR is tracked per season. Seasons currently reset on force wipe. When a season ends, ratings are cleared, the top players are announced in Discord, and a new season number starts. Check your season and stats anytime with /mmr.
After a kill
Successful kills send a fight summary in chat and to a Discord Wraith channel with the team's effective MMR and the multipliers that were active (boss HP, damage, vampiric healing, reward bonuses).
Common questions
- Can I lose MMR? Yes. Wins and losses are not symmetric; you gain more from a win than you lose from a hard-fought loss.
- Do I need a win to move MMR? No. Strong play in a loss still matters, but losing still costs rating.
- Can groups sandbag to make Wraith easy? The system has multiple anti-sandbag layers. Trying to farm your rating down usually wastes huge amounts of RP for worse rewards, and suspicious patterns can get reviewed by staff.
